Matthew's Gold Award

Gwen's son Matthew has been helping her at North Street Cycling Club on a weekly basis (and also at ERCC events where possible) as part of his BC "Cycling Award for Young Volunteers".
Just before half term he completed his Gold Award (36 hours of volunteering) and today he received his certificate and Polo shirt through the post. When Gwen got home from work he was already wearing his Polo shirt and was excitedly showing off his certificate - photo below!
He is now looking forward to starting on his Platinum award so watch this space!,
Congratulations Matthew! Other youngsters may want to take note that this opportunity exists. Matthew's dream is to become a sports coach when he leaves school and this is a fantastic structure to follow, as it leads into the Level 1 Coaching Certificate.

I am a member of the Crescent Wheelers Cycling Club and have myself recently rebuilt and modernised our Club Website. To cut a long story short, I have had a request via our new website history page, from a chap in Australia who is trying to trace his family history.
He is trying to get history about his Grandfather, WILLIAM SHEAD who was (according to an old article in the Hackney Gazette) a keen cyclist and was a member of Essex Roads and also the Comet Cycling Club. I have seen a photo of William, with a table load of cycling and running trophies, so I may assume he was pretty good.
He passed away in 1952, so I would assume he may have been a member in the 1920, 30, 40 perhaps?
Would any of your more senior members perhaps know anything about the Essex Roads history, and maybe able to shed some light on William?

This is to say thankyou to all the Essex Roads contingent who participated in the Shaftesbury Hilly 20 last Sunday and to Dave Brown for encouraging them to enter. I said some thankyous on the day but if I missed anyone, I would like to say thankyou for participating and I hope everyone enjoyed the event.
My thoughts turn to how we can build on this event to have others that are well-attended, competitive and accessible – this is something Ralph Mullan at the Shaftesbury has been pushing. I am sure we will discuss this within the Shaftesbury and I hope we can keep a dialogue going with Essex Roads on this subject.
The Shaftesbury runs an identical event on Sunday 21st October, so I hope we will see some of your club members at that event too.

On Friday and Saturday 1st and 2nd of Feb, myself representing Cycles UK will be at Jaguar in Brentwood promoting the release of the new Jaguar XF Estate as used by Team Sky. The event starts at 10 and finishes at 4 on both days with a range of activities for all the family. The event is very much a cycling themed Velo-Jaguar event. Well worth a visit even if you are not in the market for a Jag. Local clubs/teams/cyclists are invited.

I am a CTC member who was brought up in Ingrave near Brentwood.
I am trying to trace my maternal Grandfather (Ernest Clifford Berry) who died in 1920 aged 29 after being gassed in the 1st World War.
He was a keen cyclist, and if my memory is accurate I think I remember magazines of the Essex Wheelers Cycle club left by him.

ECCA Festival

Well what a fabulous event, shame we didn't cover all the time trials as we may have been 2nd but 3rd overall for this year. Cant say thank you enough to all of you that took part in the various events over the weekend. You were all really fantastic. As a team we won a few sections and ran 2nd place for quite a while cutting it fine with the Chelmer. Gwens husband Alan raced his first 7k on my old road bike no aero or clip in pedals for a very respectable time, Colin Ward won the 7k sprint in a dusting time of 9.19, Nick had a personal on the same course. Giselle did a very nice time too for the ladies. Wardy also went on to 2nd place with the most fantastic fast time over the 10tt against Joe Perret. The Audax's were well covered and we were only 2 riders down from the Eagle in the 100k but matched them in the 200k! I believe as a club we really could win it next year if we covered all the events, it is possible.

Congratulations to Colin Ward today for his fantastic win in our Essex Roads CC road race part of the high quality Eastern Road Race League. Not only did he attack and stay away for 3 x laps on his own but when he was joined by 6 x other breakaway companions he attacked again on the last lap and pulled away for a very well deserved win. Nice one Colin! Also well done to Tim Pettit & Jim Killen for their good solid performances too, and of course congratulations to Helen for another well organized, safe and exciting race for all who took part.

I've Just learned about the passing of Ray Smith. He was a lovely bloke and to me a good friend. When I was running the off road section he was a great supporter of it and came along on most of the rides. I have fond memories of our groups weekends away to all part of the country. He was a strong rider with good off road skill level. He had a great sense of humour very dry wit also, but mainly a very friendly manner. I will miss him. I shall pass on the news to the guys he rode with who are not members.

We'd like to send our Congrats to Matt "Crash" Barlow for riding an absolute blinder today at the new Gravesend Circuit today in freezing conditions. Not only was the 3/4's sent off a minute behind the E/1/2's but Matt dropped them to catch the Elites and drop them for the rest of the race showing true strength and stamina and was only just pipped to the post by a Dulwich guy who worked together with another to catch him on the line, absolutely fabulous course to spectate on too! thoroughly enjoyed our day, and congrats to Sandra for finishing in the same race which was 90 minutes!!!!!!

Hi Folks. May I take this opportunity to thank everyone in our open racing team who put in all the hard effort this year to get Essex Roads CC name firmly on the map again, in another very successful record breaking season. I will be sending out a schedule soon of the ECCA open events for next season and the ECCA Festival Weekend events. With the size club we have we could win this whole weekend, meaning money for the club. Our large membership base is sportive riders and you will be needed for next year as there are 2 very lovely long rides for you. The usual time trials and road races will also be going on that weekend and it would be lovely to see some family partnerships attempting the map reading section which entails working out clues to map co-ordinates and riding to them, in all a 20 mile ride.
Secondly, could everyone who has raced this season please email your race results, names & dates of the events to Tim Pettit so that we may get our club's awards sorted and engraved. For anyone with last year's trophies, it may now be time to get them all polished and returned.
Last of all, if anyone has been away training this year or doing other momentous rides please write up a quick story with some photos so that our members can see what a fab time you have had.

I'd like to thank everyone that turned up to help and ride. My marshal's, Mick Scott, Michael Barker, Ken Hodges and Ray Smith, pusher off, Paul Hirst and Andy Sheridan who stepped in for 5 riders till Paul got there. Spotter, George Bailey, time keepers, Dick Spanton and Tony Brown and result board Nick Hastler. Also Ray not only marshaled but also did lots of washing up and tea making with me. To all the riders that raced and to those that apologised for not being able to make it. The rain stopped in time to make it a good day, albeit a bit breezy! I hear the way back was pretty quick! There was lots of Tea's and cake consumed by all afterwards! It made for a fantastic day and a good meeting place for riders and clubs that cycled out to watch.

Very well done to Tim Petit on his fine 3^rd place at Dunton tonight. On going away with a group of five other riders from the very first lap, the group of six maintained a lead of 15 seconds for the first half hour. They slowly extended it to about 30 seconds on the finish lap, with a sprint finish. Tim finished an excellent 3^rd.

Do you like riding fixed? Or have you never tried it, but fancy giving it a go? Well, the organisers of the Becontree / ELV Friday evening 10 series are hoping to get as many riders as possible riding fixed on Friday 27th May - so why not come along and give it a go? E14/10a course is a two lapper starting from Navestock Heath - first rider off at 7.30pm, £3 a ride (including post ride tea and a cake). All welcome - even if not riding fixed (or, of course, you can ride fixed any other Friday evening).
Subsequent "special" events are scheduled for 1st July (single lap, five mile "prologue" to herald start of TdF) and 29th July ("athletes 10" on non-aero machinery).

ECCA FESTIVAL WEEKEND

I would like to send out personal thanks to all who turned up at the weekend. To those who braved the shut M11 to get up to the E2 and E33 to ride the time trials and cover the Marshalling dutes. To Mick Scott for single handedly taking on the map reading and to all of us that turned up to ride and help on the Monday at High Easter. It was a fantastic weekend. Even though we had no 4th or 3rd Cats road racing or Audax riders between us we managed to pull off a 3rd placing overall and won the club £200!!!! Cant thank you all enough! Perhaps if our sportive riders would like a challenge next year the 100k and 200k audax's need 3 riders in each to finish!!!! It's a great way to socialise with all sorts of cyclists! The Bacon Sarnies are a must too!!!

Thanks for a great day yesterday; wonderfully organised as always. I was unlucky enough to puncture with ten miles to go, only to find that the valve on my spare tube was useless. A female rider came to my rescue and let me have her spare tube, which saved the day. By the time I finished most people had gone so I had no chance to thank her properly or pay her for the tube, which I am more than willing to do. Thankyou, Roy, for your support on the ride yesterday! Your timely arrival at a few junctions helped to guide us in the right direction!
Remembrance day has always been something that I have viewed as an important day in our history, but to stand in front of the war memorial at day break on Sunday and to take a moment to remember those that have perished was an emotional experience. Please also send my gratitude and thanks to Mark Stanbury for asking me to represent the participants of the club by presenting the wreath. To have the honour of laying the wreath on behalf of Essex roads was a privilege.
Attending the ceremony at 7am certainly gave me the strength and determination to continue on in the cold, wet weather and to finish the ride.
It goes without saying this will be a fixture in my diary from now on irrespective of the weather, when one considers what we are raising money for.

Firstly I would like to say a huge thank you to all my helpers today, Elaine Barrow at the finish ringing in times, Nick Hastler, and his father John, for putting out signs and pushing off, to my marshals Dave, Andy and Simon all on the turn, I do believe Mick Scott turned up too, to Ray who turned up and fitted where ever we needed him, with out you open events would not happen.
Another big thank you to all of our sponsors, what a prize list we had! Then there is a massive thank you to Trevor Pedley who turned up, only just having an operation, and spent the entire time in the kitchen making tea and dishing out pudding and cake, infact at one point today I had 4 time keepers in the kitchen!!!
Thank you to all who rode it, with Alex making us all look like we go backwards in a winning time of 19.06!!! astonishing considering the conditions today. To Emma Johnson, who rode her first open time trial on my TT bike, she only had the warm up to get used to it and she made the prize list!!!! when its all over you realise that everyone enjoyed the race and the chat afterwards. This event was held as a celebration of the ECCA being 100 years old to which we are a founder club. I didnt come home with any cake and only enough Bread Pudding for this weeks lunch box!!!
Thank you to my Time Keepers John Cottee and Tony Brown, and Dick Spanton for awarding the prizes. I will now look forward to the winter off of organising, this was a trying week to which we had a good end!!!! Congratulations to all who raced today and to all who turned up to watch!!!

I am cycling in the 'Great British Bike Ride' from Lands End to Twickenham from the 1st to the 4th September. 344 miles in 4 days with overnight stops at Tavistock, Yeovil and Winchester.

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone at Essex Roads for a lovely cycle this morning (15.08.10). It was my first time cycling with the group and you all made me feel really welcome - thanks especially to those of you who helped to keep me motivated on the long trek back to Billericay!
As someone who had only previously cycled about 18 miles in one go it's putting it mildly to say I found it a bit of a challenge going to Wallersea Island and back, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm so proud I did it! When I got home and saw how far it was on the map I couldn't believe it!
Unfortunately I'm busy on the next four sundays, but I do hope to join you for another cycle soon (just maybe not quite as far next time....)

I noticed that there is a Tour of Britain Stage Finish in Colchester on Fri Sep 17th.
I plan to take the day off work and ride up and back via a light-traffic (flat for Paul Hirst) route. Several people I mentioned it to are up for it depending on the weather.
It would be nice to see a contingent in club colours.

London to Paris Bike Ride

Hi everyone
I'm on the scrounge and looking for sponsorship. I am taking part in the London to Paris bike ride on the 2nd September 2010 to raise much needed money for the
Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. The charity is the UK's leading provider for financial, social and emotional support to millions who have served and are currently serving in the British Armed Forces and their dependents.
The ride to Paris is approximatly 300 miles over 4 days, riding an average of 75 miles a day. My training started in January then stopped by a bicycle accident in February leaving me with a fractured arm and other nice injuries. Undeterred I began training again in May leaving home most mornings at 4:30am to cycle from Shenfield to St. Paul’s in the city and back again in the evening. Then more cycling at the weekends.
I am part of a team of 23 from Lloyds Bank (known as the green army) who are doing the ride, I would appreciate your support as I need to raise at least £1,000.00.

This is an odd one.
My name is Mark Taylor, a member of the West Suffolk Wheelers.
I am riding an event in Italy at the begining of July.
The other person I was going with has picked up an injury, so can't travel. I did ask if we could substitute someone else, but the swap deadline was last Friday. Although other people have told me you can do it after the numbered riders have departed. Now would anyone know anyone interested in coming with me to share the driving & room and getting some big climbs in..
If so check the itinerary out:
Ferry & hotel is booked cost for both £250.
Out Thursday 1st July drive, sleep, drive.
Friday arrive.
Sat: group ride with CW on one climb.
Sunday: your time is your own while 8,000 riders go on the maratona Des dolomites you vvan tag on or ride another route.
Monday: drive off and find a camp/room stop.
Tuesday: watch a stage of the Tour de France in Belgium before catching the evening ferry.

Trevor has asked that we circulate some form of notice about his ill health, and the fact that he might not be in appearance for a while, as stated below also his organising of 2 counties events. As I know some of our race riders read the "post it" so could this also be put on there as a hold your entries till we find out who is going to organise the ECCA events that Trevor Pedley was to organise???? I was with Trevor yesterday at the Victoria event and he is in good spirits but he does an awful lot so its going to be a tough few months ahead for us all on the ECCA committee.

Thank you for a BRILLIANT, brilliant Go-Ride at Mayflower School today – we all had lots and lots of fun racing (the slow races were very tricky though!). I was really proud to see other children wearing the new T-shirt for Essex Road Juniors – I am going to tell all my friends to buy one! I am really looking foward to the next session at Lake Meadows.

Ian James Mashen. It is with regret that I have to announce that Ian lost his long battle with bowel cancer on Monday 10th May. He died peacefully at home in the presence of his wife Lynda and all his family.

A cremation service will be held on Friday 21st May at 2:45pm at Chelmsford Cemetery & Crematorium, all members wishing to attend will be welcome. After the service there will be a gathering for afternoon tea at the Ivory Rooms Billericay.

We are running our open event on Sunday 23rd May out at Birch. For some it might be a bit of a trek out but its a good ride if anyone wishes to ride out and watch. First rider is off at 8am. with 55 riders racing. Birch Village Hall with have hot and cold drinks as well as cake for anyone interested.

ECCA Festival

I would just like to say that as a club we have excelled ourselves this year at the ECCA Festival and I thank every single one of you for riding in such awful conditions this year. It looks as though we have come 2nd overall, there was still some points to come in but we look very strong. Colin Ward being our newest rider has had a fantastic 3 days, his last event being the 2 up with Colin Wilgress coming 2nd in hailstones and 4 degrees, fantastic. All the time trials were covered and our road racing team were exceptional this year too, well done lads! Gwen was an outstanding rider this year covering solo and tandem events with myself, a very challenging day but worth it and a VTTA record for us over 10 miles! To the Audax riders, you know who you are, we cannot thank you enough for turning up and making it round the 100 and 200k rides in an extremely windy day, shame our sportif riders didnt take up the challenge too! I look forward to you all riding the rest of season and making Essex Roads stand out again in the racing circle. Congratulations Team! some photo's are on the Essex Roads Face Book site.

Club Racers, the ECCA E9/25, 25 mile time trial, slightly sporting, out on the 1060 at Writtle to Dunmow and back has spaces for riders. Entries close Tuesday. There are already Essex roads riders entered, so it would be good if we could have a large number racing!!!
We had 6 representatives in the first open ECCA last week! Well done to all our riders. The ECCA Festival is coming up the first weekend in May a 3 day racing meeting with hundreds of cyclists in all forms. I will get the details out to you all soon.

Hi – I am the event organiser for the Race for Life events in Essex and am looking for the support of volunteers. There are two events especially we need additional support of marshalling the course. They are;
Sunday 9th May – Harlow – one event 11am – arrive around 9am
Sunday 6th June – Basildon – three events during the day

Race for Life raises around £60 million each year to beat cancer and we simply cannot run the events without the fabulous support from volunteers. I really hope you will register and that you will encourage your friends and colleagues to come along as well, to take part in Race for Life or to volunteer.
Events like the Harlow Race for Life have marshal positions all over the town and a cycle team would be perfect as marshals for this course.

Redbridge CC held a speed judging competition at the end of 2009 – Entries had to nominate a chosen speed then ride a given course of undeclared distance without map/speedo/Garmin. Congratulations Chris Hutchinson, who chose 12mph (on 67” fixed) and won the event with a lucky 1 minute error over 13.8 miles!
